Bazzel Denbow was born on 14 January 1819 at Harford, Maryland, USA; His "Graves Record" from the Adjutant General's office says he was born in 1824, but census records and other documents place birth year as 1819.1 He married Ruth Tanner, daughter of John Tennar and Mary Elizabeth Tipton, on 2 January 1845 at Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio, USA. Marriage license issued 31 December 1844 "on oath of groom." Rev. Elias Gatchel signed the document on 10 February 1845. This license is reproduced in Bazzel's Civil War pension file. The minister and/or copyist was not too careful with his spellings, as "Denbow" is spelled "Danbow" and "Tanner" is spelled "Tennor." Some researchers have thought that this was an alternate spelling of Ruth's last name; however, I've concluded that it's just sloppy spelling.2 Bazzel Denbow was a farmer in 1850 at Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA.1 He, 31, appeared as Head of Household on the census of 31 July 1850 at Center Twp, Monroe, Ohio, USA.3 He, 41, appeared as Head of Household on the census of 9 July 1860 and his neighbor was John Denbow Jr. at Summit Twp., Monroe, Ohio, USA.4 Bazzel Denbow was one of six Denbow brothers who fought for the Union in Civil War, five of these brothers were in K Company of the 78th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Their father, John Denbow (1797-1862), was also in this same regiment and company. He began military service on 1 January 1862 at Co. K, 78th OVI.5 He ended military service on 12 April 1863 at Vista Landing, Lake Providence, Louisana, Louisiana, USA.5 He died on 23 November 1896 at Monroe, Ohio, USA, at age 77.2 He was buried on 28 November 1896 at Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA.2
