James' two children Ruthand and Betty, were killed with their cousin, Doris, and their grandparents, Bingham (Ben) and Bertha Collins, in a train accident on 18 August 1927 in Bucyrus, Ohio. The family was having a picnic. The train tracks ran right by the picnic ground. The grandparents, Bingham and Bertha Collins, had their three grandaughters in the car. A T&OC train crashed into the car killing all of them while horrified family members already at the picnic looked on. Robert Henderson Sharp recalled receiving the news of the tragedy.
