Susan Sharp's Notes:
According to Cora Horm Enterline, Catharine Dunkelberger smoked a pipe. Cora said she had a tintype of her with it.
In 1989 Susan Reid Sharp visited the grave of Catharine Doney. She is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery near Emerickville, PA. There is no stone for Gerson Doney, although there are marble plot markers with the initials G.D.
The book, Tombstone Hopping by Patricia Steele, G.c 974.801 J35st v.1, Doney, Catharine w/o Gerson 4/2/1815-9/7/1874, Lutheran Cemetery located at Emerickville, North on T 462. (Turn right off Rt. 310 on Lutheran Cemetery Rd., just a little past Emerickville. In 1989 a big gold colored house called the Sportsman's Hall was on the corner on the left.) Inscription on stone: "Remember friend, As you cry, As you are now so once was I, As I am now, so you will be, Prepare for death and follow me."
All information on the Dunkelberger Family, unless otherwise noted, comes from the book: Dunkelberger Family, Europe to America, 1600-1982, compiled by Shirley J. Turner C. G., Tuscon,Arizona; copyright Library Congress Card No. 82-60215, 1982, Printed in Tuscon by Master Printers. This book is in the collection of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. An address noted in the book was: Mrs. Shirley Turner, 2635 North Summit Dr., Tuscon, Arizona 85745. In July of 1993 I attempted to call Mrs. Turner to try to obtain a copy of her book. Information operators listed no Turner on Summit St. The area code is 602. A call to the local historica lsociety also proved fruitless.
Book: Dunkelberger Family, Europe to America, Page 257. Catherine Dunkelberger Doney, Catherine Dunkelberger (3101), daughter of Christopher (26) and his second wife, Catherine (Fry Reichert) Dunkelberger, was born 2 April 1815 and died 7 September 1874. She was buried at the Lutheran Cemetery, Emerickville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. There is a tombstone there showing the above dates. Circa 1832, she married Gershon/Garson/Gerson/Gibson Doney. There has been much difference of opinion about the name of Catherine's husband. J. L. Floyd thought that she had married a George Kerstetter. Mrs. Auker wrote to this compiler that a descendant of Catherine Doney, by the name of Ellen Doney, had in her possession a baptismal certificate of Catherine (Fry Reichert) Dunkelberger. This indicated to her that Christopher's daughter had married Garson Doney.
In the mid 1840's, Catherine and Garson Doney moved to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. According to the 1860 census of Pine Creek Township (Jefferson) and another sources, they had eight children. Although Garson Doney's tombstone has not been located, he died sometime after the 1880 census. 4053 i. William Doney, 20 December 1833 - 13 December 1898; m. Margaret(?); 4054 ii.
