According to Jean Saunders Davis her grandfather, Sam Hunter, came to the USA with his father, John Hunter, and a little girl named Mary, who was the illegitimate child of one of Sam's brothers or sisters. John, a widower, had inherited a bar and bawdy house in Troy, New York from his brother, William Hunter. John Hunter was not there very long before he sold the place. Came to USA about 1863. According to Vivian Doney Reid, Rose and Sam Hunter lived in Rossiter. Pa. above Brody's Store. The name of the store was Leavenson's before it was Brody's. Sam Hunter was the Constable in Rossiter, Pa. Rossiter had no jail. Viv said she would go to their house (Rose and Sam's) with their grandsons, Ken and Sam Hunter, and the Hunters would give them moneyt o go to the store to buy candy. She said they always gave Ken and Sam more money because they were their grandchildren. Both the Hunters had snow white hair. They lived somewhere else in Pa. before moving to Rossiter -- possibly Anita.
According to Sam Hunter of Georgia during a telephone conversation with him in 1994, Sam Hunter, his grandfather, ran a pool hall in Rossiter. According to Sam Hunter of Georgia, he was told that his grandfather, Sam Hunter, was raised near Glascow in Scotland.
