Vance Sharp was a very tall man. He was given the nickname "Shorty." Later his son, LLoyd Wayne, was known as "Shorty"' even though he was not particularly tall. Andrew was a conductor on the Toledo and Ohio Railroad. Maggie Jane Cooper served lunch in her home to the men that worked on the railroad. It was here that Andrew Vance met his future bride, Maggie's daughter, Maude Elsie Sherer. We have a small wooden step-stool with a hand opening in the top that Andrew Vance Sharp used during the time he worked for the railroad. Later, he was also a policeman and a detective in Bucyrus. One time he sat down on a park bench and his pistol fell and discharged when it hit the ground and he "shot himself through the back." While he was serving as City Night Detective he caught pneumonia and died. His son, Robert Henderson Sharp, remembers that while he was sick you could hear him struggling for breath throughout the house. At the time of his death Shorty Sharp was running for Sheriff of Crawford County on the Democratic ticket. This information was recalled by Robert Henderson Sharp. Verification of his occupation is found in the U. S. Census for 1910. Robert Tadsen Sharp has his 'sap' that he used in the course of his duties.
