John Heaton was born near Bel Air Maryland in 1792. He married Susanna Barton, who was born in Maryland in 1794. John was a wealthy farmer in the Harford County, Maryland area near the Pennsylvania state line. The story goes that John threatened his favorite son John Jr. that he would cut him out of his will if he enlisted in the Civil War. Young John therefore hid out at Bulls Mountain until the quota of soldiers had been filled in his county. He later inherited the farm and other investments, but squandered it away with his high style of living. John and Susanna lived their lives near their birthplace. Both are buried in the Fellowship Cemetery, near Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania.
