John H. Byrne, Attorney, Dies At Age 75
John Hill Byrne, 75, an attorney, of 654 N. President Ave., died Friday morning at St. Joseph Hospital after suffering from cancer for several months. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Jacob Hill and Mary Deborah Allwein Byrne.
He was the husband of the late Rita J. Barton Byrne, who died in November, 1960, and Gloria M. Eshleman Byrne.
Byrne was an attorney in Lancaster. From 1969 to 1979, he was an attorney/real estate specialist with the Land Management Division of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Prior to that, he had a private practice in Lancaster from 1937 to 1966.
Byrne was a 1932 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and also studied law with Robert Ruppin. In 1937, he was admitted into the Lancaster Bar and the Pennsylvania State Bar Association.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Also, he was a member of the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps during World War II as an interrogator of German prisoners of war. He was also a member of the Lancaster Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 134.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons: John H. Byrne, Jr., Glen Moore; Peter H. and David H, Byrne, Lancaster; and Richard H. Byrne, Mountville; four grandchildren; a sister, Sister Mary Assisium, Staten Island, N.Y.; and a brother, Dr. Richard Hill Byrne, Washington Grove, Md.
