Biography

John Denbow was born in 1797 in Harford, Maryland, USA. He witnessed the birth of Bazzel Denbow on 14 January 1819 in Harford, Maryland, USA, His "Graves Record" from the Adjutant General's office says he was born in 1824, but census records and other documents place birth year as 1819.1 John Denbow witnessed the birth of Edith Denbow in 1821 in Harford, Maryland, USA. He witnessed the birth of James Denbow on 20 April 1824 in Harford, Maryland, USA, Several sources list his birth year as 1823; the official GravesRecord from the Adjutant General's office says 1827, which is mostassuredly wrong. John Denbow witnessed the birth of Sarah Ann Denbow in 1825. He witnessed the birth of Elizabeth Denbow in 1827 in Ohio, USA. He witnessed the birth of John Denbow, Jr., on 9 August 1827.2 John Denbow witnessed the birth of Susan Denbow on 27 January 1831 in Monroe, Ohio, USA.3 He witnessed the birth of Levi Denbow on 29 November 1832 in Monroe, Ohio, USA. John Denbow witnessed the birth of George Washington Denbow on 8 August 1834 in Carroll, Ohio, USA. John Denbow witnessed the birth of Jackson Denbow on 8 August 1834. John Denbow witnessed the birth of William Denbow on 25 April 1839 in Carroll, Ohio, USA. John Denbow witnessed the birth of Martin Denbow on 25 September 1842 in Ohio, USA. John Denbow and Martha A. Sharp were married on 9 March 1818 in Harford, Maryland, USA, This marriage date, which differs by exactly one year from the one recorded in the Marriage License book for Harford County appears to be correct. I suspect a clerical error in the book.4 He and Martha A. Sharp were married on 9 March 1819 in Harford, Maryland, USA.5 He died on 14 April 1862, at age ~65, in Paducah, McCracken, Kentucky, USA, Actual diary entry that contains numerous errors (wrong age, transcription error on regiment number, etc.): "April 14, today I was awakened at four o'clock to lay out a dead man. His name was Bryan Davis, K. 28th Ill. wounded through the lungs. Since writing the above a man died. His name was John Denbow, 18 Ohio. He was upwards 77 years old. His son is also in the hospital; he is over 45 years old."6,7 He died on 26 July 1862, at age ~65, in Bolivar, Hardeman, Tennessee, USA, This date would fit the family story better, though it is before the Battle of Bolivar that the 78th OVI fought in. However, the diary from the Paducah hospital makes this highly unlikely.6
John Denbow resided with Martha A. Sharp in Monroe, Ohio, USA, in 1849.8 He was a farmer in Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA, in 1850.1 He , appeared as Head of Household in the census on 31 July 1850 in Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA. Bazzel Denbow, son, and family are listed as neighbors on this census.166,9
