Biography

Bazzel Denbow was born on 14 January 1819 in Harford, Maryland, USA.1 He married Ruth Tanner, daughter of John Tanner and Mary Elizabeth Tipton, on 2 January 1845 in Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio, USA. Marriage license issued 31 December 1844 "on oath of groom." Rev. Elias Gatchel signed the document on 10 February 1845. This license is reproduced in Bazzel's Civil War pension file. The minister and/or copyist was not too careful with his spellings, as "Denbow" is spelled "Danbow" and "Tanner" is spelled "Tennor." Some researchers have thought that this was an alternate spelling of Ruth's last name; however, I've concluded that it's just sloppy spelling, though other members of her family spell Tanner in a variety of other ways.2 Bazzel Denbow died on 23 November 1896 in Monroe, Ohio, USA, at the age of 77.3 He was buried on 28 November 1896 in Bracken Ridge Cemetery, Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA.3
In 1850 Bazzel Denbow was a farmer in Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA.1 He , 31, appeared as Head of Household on the census on 31 July 1850 in Center Twp., Monroe, Ohio, USA.4 He , 41, appeared as Head of Household on the census on 9 July 1860 in Summit Twp., Monroe, Ohio, USA.5 Was one of six Denbow brothers who fought for the Union in Civil War, five of these brothers were in K Company of the 78th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Their father, John Denbow (1797-1862), was also in this same regiment and company.6 He began military service on 1 January 1862 in Lewisville, Monroe, Ohio, USA, in Co. K of the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.6 He ended military service. in Co. K of the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (Surgeon's Certificate of Disability cited "Hereditary Consumption" as the reason) on 12 April 1863 at Vista Landing in Lake Providence, East Carroll, Louisiana, USA.6,7
